HONEY FACTS : LOMI HONEY

Honey Bees by the Numbers

1/12th of a teaspoon is the number of honey one worker bee produces in her lifetime.

55,000 miles is how far a bee must fly to produce one pound of honey.

90,000 is how many miles a honey bee will fly for 1 kg of honey, which is equivalent to three trips around the earth.

1 is the amount of ounces needed to fuel a bee’s flight around the world.

50 – 100 flowers are visited by each bee during a collection trip.

2 million flowers are used to make one pound of honey.

20,000 – 60,000 honeybees make up a colony.

6 is the number of weeks a worker bee lives.

All worker bees are female.

Male bees are only around to reproduce.

5 years is how long a queen bee can live.

2,500 is the number of eggs a queen bee can lay per day.

She has control over whether she lays male or female eggs.

Stored sperm is used to hatch a female egg, which means eggs that are not fertilized become male bees.
6 to 8 pounds of honey is ingested to produce one pound of beeswax.

1.3 pounds of honey is consumed by the average American each year.

92-93 degrees Fahrenheit is the temperature inside the hive at all time, no matter the temperature outside.

In the winter bees form a tight cluster to keep the queen and themselves warm.

Bees sense of smell is 50 times greater than dogs : lomihoney

Bees sense of smell is 50 times better than that of dogs

Honey bees have 170 odorant receptors in their antenna, and have a sense of smell 50 times betterthan a dog.

Bees are able to detect scents with their mouths, antennae and tips of their legs (tarsi).

In all these areas bees have sensilla: tiny, hair-shaped organs that incorporate receptor nerve cells.

Bees have been 'trained' to sniff out landmines by their trainers making the bees associate the scent of TNT with a sugary meal.

Honey for athletes: lomi honey

Honey for athletes:

Consuming carbohydrates before and during exercise can help improve your performance.

Before exercising, these carbohydrates should be in the form of a snack, while during exercise it should be a sports drink.

Following exercise, protein and carbohydrates should be consumed within two hours.

Not all carbohydrates successfully serve this purpose.

This is because different types have varying affects on the delivery of carbohydrates to your muscles and elicit different hormonal responses, according to the February 2002 issue of "Strength and Conditioning Journal."

Many athletes opt for sports gels to satisfy their carbohydrate needs prior to and during exercise.

However, honey may be just as effective. When compared to placebos, sports gels and honey helped athletes to generally perform faster in time trials.

In addition, athletes consuming sports gels or honey are able to generate more power in the last stretch of exertion, according to a double-blind randomized controlled trial in the March 2004 issue of "Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research."

HONEY BEE HAS 5 EYES : LOMI HONEY

Honey bees has 5 eyes:

Eyes – Incredible as it may seem, the honey bee has FIVE eyes, two large compound eyes and three smaller ocelli eyes in the centre of its head.

Bees need eyes not only to pick up colors and UV markings in flowers, as well as shapes, but also to navigate.

Thus the two sets of eyes are adapted to perform different tasks simultaneously.

The two large eyes at the side of the head (known as 'compound eyes') are used for picking up shapes and colours in the immediate environment, whilst the three small eyes on the top of the head (known as the 'ocelli') are important for navigation and orientation

black honey

What Is Dark Honey?

Dark honey is a kind of honey that has a dark-brown or dark-amber color, in contrast to light honey, which is whitish or light amber in color.

Like all kinds of honey, dark honey is produced by honey bees that harvest the nectar of certain flowers, break it down into sugar, and deposit it in a honeycomb, which is where humans can collect it.

Different colors of honey come from different floral sources, though certain flowers that bloom year-round may produce lighter or darker honey depending on the time of year.

Benefits of Dark Honey

Honey is a natural sweetener with many health benefits. All types of honey, including dark honey, contain fructose, a type of sugar that is sweeter than sucrose (table sugar), so you can use less honey than you would sugar.

You can add dark honey to things that you’d normally add sugar to, or use it as a sugar substitute in baking.

Dark honey varieties contain high amounts of antioxidants which combat free radicals, which are molecules that damage cells.

Studies on buckwheat honey, a dark honey, showed that it has an antioxidant content that is 20 times higher than other types of honey.

jamun honey health benefits

Jamun honey:

Jamun seeds contain jambosine and jamboline.

These substances slow down the process of converting starch into sugar.

Thus, the possibility of sudden shooting up of blood sugar levels is lesser when the starch in the food get metabolized.

Type 2 diabetics have low levels of insulin to affect blood glucose.

This can be due to the fast degradation of the insulin that is produced.

Jamun seeds ensure that enough insulin is present by either increasing its secretion or preventing its quicker degradation.
